RX rotation gate
A parametrized single-qubit rotation about the Bloch-sphere X axis, one of the two generators (with RZ) used to synthesize arbitrary single-qubit unitaries.

RX(π/3) on |0⟩
One qubit starting at |0⟩, rotated by π/3 — a third of a half-turn, so the qubit ends up part way between |0⟩ and |1⟩ rather than at either.

Phases are measured against the largest amplitude. A global phase is not observable, so only the differences carry meaning.
Rotates the qubit by π/3, leaving it 75% likely to read 0 and 25% to read 1 — cos²(π/6) and sin²(π/6). It also leaves a quarter turn of phase between the two halves — the panel prints it as 3π/2, the same angle reached from the other side — and that phase is the whole difference between RX and RY.
Probability spreads from 1 outcome to 2.
Readout Measuring gives 0 about three times in four. RX and RY at the same angle give exactly these probabilities, so a bar chart cannot tell them apart — the phase panel can.

RX(θ) generalizes the Pauli-X gate into a continuous one-parameter family, letting a circuit dial in any rotation angle instead of only the π flip.
Takes1 qubitWhat joins here
Takes a 1-qubit register and states no assumption about what is on it. That is the whole condition: anything returning 1 qubits can feed it.
15 entries meet this end. Named below.
Returns1 qubitWhat joins here
Returns a 1-qubit register a next stage can take. This is the end that joins.
13 entries meet this end. Named below.
A unitary. The same register goes in and comes out, and this entry states no assumption about what is on it — which is what lets anything of the same width feed it. See all 29 →
Definition
The gate rotates a single qubit about the axis of the Bloch sphere by an angle :
This follows from the operator-exponential identity , which holds because , so the Taylor series splits into even and odd powers of that resum to cosine and sine respectively.
Action on basis states
At this produces an equal superposition with a relative phase of rather than the that produces — the two gates land on different points of the Bloch-sphere equator.
Key identities
- : a full rotation reproduces the Pauli-X flip up to the global phase , unobservable in isolation but relevant inside controlled operations.
- : rotations about the same axis compose additively, so forms a one-parameter subgroup of .
- : since , conjugating by Hadamard swaps the rotation axis from to — the standard way a -rotation-native compiler synthesizes .
- Together with , generates arbitrary single-qubit unitaries via Euler decomposition, e.g. up to a global phase.

RX(π/2)on q[0]
Quantum vs classical
Classical baseline
Use a classical state-vector or matrix simulation at the same width, precision, and measurement objective.
Quantum claim
The quantum record demonstrates a state or operator behavior; it does not make classical simulation or communication costs disappear.
How to compare
Compare fidelity, samples, gate depth, noise, memory, and the cost of preparing and reading the state.
